This
rare wall-hanging armadillo head will be a standout addition to your collection.
This armadillo head sculpture is based on a lightweight hard sculpture.
Our artist Merikay color-treats a fabric to create the hide.
She also hand-makes the soulful eyes that
seem to reflect the lonely, hard-scrabble existence of this resident of the
highways and byways of the southern United States and Central and South
America.
Merikay had not made an armadillo since we lived in Texas many years ago.
In 2005 a lady in the San Francisco Bay area called and asked if she could
order an armadillo head sculpture. Always eager to please a customer,
Merikay offered to make one on a conditional approval basis. The lady was
quite pleased by the unique creation shown at right!
About Armadillos
Armadillos live in southern USA and Central and South America. They are clad in hard and bony
body plates that give them quite a bit of protection from predators. When threatened
they can either curl up into a ball, or pull their legs in under the tough shields
over their shoulder and hips, while multiple bands protect their backs. Unfortunately
their armor is of little help against their main enemy, the automobile!
Armadillos are nocturnal and are too often caught in a vehicle’s headlights while crossing
or traveling down a road. Most armadillos eat small vertebrates and insects,
which they dig from the soil with great speed.
This
is the kind of armadillo Merikay used to make
when we lived in Texas, and all of her work had crocheted skins.
We e-mailed an old picture of one of those creatures to
the lady who ordered the head shown above, and of course she had to
have one of those too!
We show this image as a sample of Merikay’s crochet work and as a
reminder to anyone who has built a collection of her earlier work. She will still
do a crocheted version of any of our animal head sculptures as a commission.
Those of you who crochet should see our books
on crocheting several kinds of animal heads and soft-stuffed birds.
