About Mongooses
Mongooses live in Africa, Southern Asia, and southern Spain. They are mostly carnivorous but will supplement their diet with fruit in hard times. Since Rudyard Kipling’s Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, many people think that mongooses feed mainly on snakes. But there are far too few snakes, and far too many mongooses in their range, for snakes to be a major diet item. Most mongooses are solitary but some live and hunt in packs, which like dog packs have dominance ordering for both breeding and feeding. They are endangered only by habitat destruction by humans, particularly in Madagascar.
