Special
for the discriminating owl collector or Harry Potter fan.
Our artist Merikay uses hand painted velveteen fabric for the body feathers of our snowy owl.
She creates the beak and talons from polymer clay, and uses soft real feathers for the fluff
on its face and feet.
The tree this snowy owl is perched in is also an original sculpture. Merikay makes the bark
with a treated fabric which she paints and covers with lichens and moss from our home in
the forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains.

About Owls
Owls are night birds, preying mostly on small mammals and acting as
an important population control of mice and rats. The disappearance of our pet cat, several
years ago, occurred at the peak of chick-raising by the Great Horned Owl that
inhabits our Santa Cruz mountains of California.
At
one time all of our animal head sculptures had crocheted skins.
But over the years all have made a transition to man-made fur and other materials.
The last to switch was the owl.
Our artist Merikay will still crochet an owl for you on special order.
Those of you who crochet should see our book
on crocheting several kinds of soft-stuffed birds,
including the crocheted owl at right.
This is a white-fronted crocheted owl. It is crocheted from
several yarns and soft-stuffed. Merikay hand makes the beak, and the feet from chenille
stems. The owl is perched on an authentic Santa Cruz Mountain stick.
